Not sure McCreery’s latest is his best. The traditional-forward songs which dominate this album don’t hit don’t pack in the same riffs as previous albums, all of which have been great (with the exception of his debut). I also usually love Frank Rogers’ production but this one all blends into one mush of rinky dink melodies. He’d done better.
I think I agree with you for the most part. Other albums took bigger swings and they paid off more often than not.
On the other hand, and this is admittedly speculative, this album feels most aligned with McCarty as an artist. He always feels more at home with traditional material. Hard to say what he personally thinks, but vocally and stylistically, trad country is a better fit.
This is a very consistent and cohesive sounding record. The downside is that, as you said, the songs can flow into one another too much.
